DELE Exams

What are the DELE exams?

The Diploma of Spanish as a Second Language, or DELE qualifications (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) are recognised all over the Spanish speaking world. They are qualifications for non-native Spanish speakers, and are offered by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture, through the Instituto Cervantes. The four skills that are examined are:

  • reading
  • written and aural comprehension
  • grammar and vocabulary
  • oral expression

There are six levels of language ability - A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 - and these are described below. The levels are specified by the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference), and form an international standard for language learning. It is used in language schools all over the world - for all languages, not just Spanish!

In Melbourne the exams are held once a year, on approximately 19 May. Registration closes 5 weeks beforehand the exam.

All of the texts used at El Patio are directed towards these exams, although you normally need to do extra study to prepare due to the format of the exam (quite apart from your Spanish!). To register for a DELE exam you need to apply through the Instituto Cervantes in Sydney.

What has the CEFR to do with El Patio?

  • El Patio offers courses at all six of the CEFR levels
  • El Patio's courses are guided by these six levels
  • If you want to take DELE exam, your level is easily determined
