When did you begin teaching Spanish?

I started teaching Spanish in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was working in a languages institute which provides classes for companies. I was doing my usual English teaching and working in administration. One day there due to a public transport mishap, one of the teachers rang saying he couldn’t arrive to his Intensive Spanish one-to-one class. My boss asked me to step in. It was thrilling and really fun. After that, I’ve taught Spanish on and off in between my English teaching until I arrived in Australia.

How did you start in Australia?

I arrived in Melbourne December 18th, 2016, I came originally to visit my family who I hadn’t seen in over 30 years. I fell in love with the city and started studying here. Through my cousin’s wife, I heard about El Patio (she had worked here) and I submitted my resume. She told me I would love it since it was a great institute and has a fun, warm atmosphere…and she was 100% right. I started teaching in August 2017 and I love it.

What is a loveable aspect of teaching Spanish in Australia?

I enjoy thoroughly teaching cultural aspects together with the language. As many of us, teachers of a foreign language do, we know that you cannot teach the language separate from its context. Teaching about all the countries we come for, or where we have spent a big part of our lives makes teaching Spanish in Australia really enjoyable. It is a very important aspect for both of us, students and teachers, to be able to share knowledge through experience and comparison. Those moments make teaching and learning unique. It is pretty special when students share their knowledge, or we compare habits, traditions from the two (or three) continents in a class.

¿Cuándo empezaste a enseñar español y dónde?

What is the most challenging aspect of teaching Australians?

It actually depends on each person. Each of us has a different challenge. One of the things that I’ve noticed many students find difficult is the pronunciation of vowel sounds. I usually explain that it's not necessary to sound native especially not in the first stages of learning, but it does help to be aware of how different sounds are in Spanish. Also, it helps to understand audio activities and real-life conversations better.

Do you have any suggestions for how students can better prepare for each class?

I think that every little extra bit of learning and practice you do is invaluable. The more you immerse yourself in Spanish, therefore in the culture, the more prepared you are for the following class. I usually suggest fun-related activities like karaoke, singing, reading, watching series or videos, etc. because it has been proven that one learns best in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. If you like music, then listen to music in Spanish, if you like reading then start with some basic readers, etc. Also, the material El Patio provides really supports students class by class and makes their job easier. If you use them daily then, you are halfway there. By the time you get to class, you already know vocabulary, grammar structures and many other things. It is important to take advantage of everything that is offered.

What do you think the best method for memorisation is?

I think each person learns and memorises in a different way. I, for example, find listening and music activities easy. Some students memorise best by re-writing, which is very helpful. A lot of people have a strong visual memory. Others learn best by exposing themselves to Spanish as much as possible. Any chance they get, they will try to communicate, not afraid of making mistakes or what other people think. I believe that memorisation is very personal, so it helps when in class you are really aware of what your language strengths are. Then, when you go back home you can really think of ways of improving your learning in a way that is relevant to you.

What teaching methods do you like to bring to the classroom?

I mainly try to use the communicative method. I believe that the more we practice a part of the language, the more confident we become in using it. First, we use a guided practice and then try to practice without any guidance. Even when we explain a grammar structure first, to gain confidence, it is useful, later on to practice it through the different skill sets: listening/speaking and reading/writing. I usually discuss a lot with my students why certain structures are the way they are, we compare with English if possible, and this, in my opinion helps to better understand the language. I love when they ask me questions and it forces me to think about something I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. I also believe that the Situational method really helps language learning. Each unit of learning is contextualised and connected to others, so, if we situate ourselves in a certain real-life situation, learning is done by imagining or recalling us being in that kind of situation. I would like to apply here the phrase the more, the merrier, the more approaches you use (according to the situation, the class and the students learning skills) the better it is for overall improvement.

Is there a common question that students ask about the acquisition of Spanish? And your answer?

The typical question is How long will it take me to learn the language?, I always respond that it takes different time for each person. Again, learning is very personal, subjective so it depends on everything mentioned before: how much time and dedication you put in and outside the classroom. You cannot be afraid of talking to others and practice in real-life situations. Everything you do regarding learning adds up.

Angie's Argentinian Folklore Exercise!

I pride myself in teaching about Argentinian traditions and culture. Argentina is mostly known, when talking about culture, for tango and what goes on in Buenos Aires, but as you can imagine, in such a big country there is more to it than just tango and stake. In the rest of the provinces there are different cultures according to the different provinces with their own music, food, dance and folklore. So, I really enjoy sharing my habits and customs with them. Teaching about Argentinian folklore is something I had not imagine before, and I just enjoy it a lot.
