'With the Strength of the Sun' Andean Carnival is held annually in Arica, Northern Chile. As one of the most important Latin American carnivals, it celebrates Andean culture and unites Spanish, Catholic and Indigenous traditions shared between northern Chile, Peru and Bolivia. 

The aim is to rescue, promote and spread Andean culture through dance and music.

It is celebrated for three days during summer. This year it was held on the 7th, 8th and 9th of February, with more than 16,000 dancers and musicians and 100,000 spectators. During these days the whole city becomes a stage for many colourful groups of different dance styles, such as 'Caporales', 'Morenada' and 'Diablada', of Bolivian origin.

El Carnaval de Arica, en el norte de Chile, es uno de los carnavales más importantes de Latinoamérica . Celebra la cultura andina uniendo tradiciones españolas, católicas e indígenas compartidas entre el norte de Chile, Perú y Bolivia.  

El objetivo es rescatar, promover y difundir la cultura andina a través de la danza y la música.  

Se celebra durante tres días durante el verano. Este año se celebró los días 7, 8 y 9 de febrero, con más de 16.000 bailarines y músicos y 100.000 espectadores. Durante estos días, toda la ciudad se convierte en el escenario de muchos grupos coloridos de diferentes estilos como "Caporales", "Morenada" y "Diablada" de origen boliviano.



CAPORALES

Caporales has its origins in the Afro-Andean dances of the Yungas region of Bolivia. This dance represents the foremen who were in charge of the slaves in colonial times.

Caporales tiene su origen en los bailes afroandinos de la región de Yungas de Bolivia. Este baile representa a los capataces que estaban a cargo de los esclavos en la época colonial. 

MORENADA

Morenada is a music and dance style from the Bolivian Andes possibly inspired by the suffering of the African slaves brought to work in the silver mines of Potosi.

Morenada es un estilo de música y danza de los Andes bolivianos posiblemente inspirado por los sufrimientos de los esclavos africanos que fueron llevados a trabajar a las minas de plata de Potosí.

DIABLADA

Diablada is a dance characterised by the mask and devil suit worn by the performers and is based on a mixture of Catholic and Andean religious ceremonies.

Diablada es una danza que se caracteriza por la máscara y el traje del diablo que usan los artistas y se basa en una mezcla de ceremonias religiosas católicas y andinas.
