Why did you study to become a teacher of Spanish?
I studied English-Spanish Translation at university, so I had subjects about both English and Spanish. Learning about how Spanish works as a language, I fell in love with it. I adored Spanish grammar and linguistics. I felt that I wanted to talk about it for the rest of my life. Knowing English, I knew I could connect with people who didn't speak Spanish but wanted to learn.
¿Por qué estudiaste para ser profesora de español?
En la universidad estudié traducción inglés-español, por lo tanto tuve ramos relacionado con el inglés y con el español. Aprendiendo cómo funciona el idoma español, me enamoré de él. Me encantaba gramática y lingüística. Sentí que quería hablar sobre eso el resto de mi vida y que, al saber inglés, podría conectarlo con gente que no hablara español y quisiera aprender.
When and where did you begin teaching Spanish?
My first job was at a small Spanish school in the centre of my city, Santiago. I learnt a lot there, and I realised that what I dreamt when I was at university was possible: to teach Spanish as a second language. After this experience, to improve as a teacher, I did a diploma in teaching Spanish as an additional language.
¿Cuándo empezaste a enseñar español y dónde?
Mi primer trabajo después de la universidad fue en una escuela en el centro de mi ciudad, en Santiago. Ahí aprendí mucho y me di cuenta que mi sueño de la Universidad sí sería possible. Entonces, para enseñar mejor, hice un diploma de enseñanza de español como lengua extranjera.

How and where did you start teaching Spanish in Australia?
I came to Australia for the first time in 2019, and I had a few private students, but I had to go back to my country because of the pandemic. I came back to Australia in 2022 and applied at El Patio.
It is a dream to work in another country with groups of students from all over the world and teach part of my language and culture.
¿Cómo y dónde empezaste a enseñarlo en Australia?
Vine a Australia por primera vez en 2019 y tuve algunos alumnus particulares. Luego volví a mi país por la pandemia. Regresé a Australia en 2022 y postulé a El Patio.
Es un placer tener clases grupales con estudiantes de todas partes y poder enseñar parte de mi idioma y mi cultura.
What do you love about teaching Spanish in Australia? And what is the most challenging aspect?
I like the interest that Australian people show in Latin American culture. They ask not only about language, but also food, music, politics, history, geography, people, and places.
As for the challenge, I don't think it is only for Australian people. A lot of people who want to learn another language don’t understand how their own language works. This makes it a little bit difficult to understand some grammar aspects or even some aspects of pronunciation. Most of the people who speak any language don't realise how complex it is, and how much work they do just to communicate every day!
¿Qué aspecto te gusta de la enseñanza del español en Australia? ¿Y qué es lo que te resulta más difícil?
Me impresiona el nivel de interés que tienen los autralianos por la cultura latinoamericana. No solo quieren aprender español, sino que sobre la música, la historia, la politica, la comida, la geografía, la gente y los lugares.
Hablando del reto, no creo que sea algo dificil solo en Australia. Mucha gente que quiere aprender otra lengua no sabe cómo funciona su propio idioma. Esto hace que sea un poco difícil entender algunos aspecto de la gramática, o incluso algún aspecto de la pronunciación del idioma que se está aprendiendo. La mayoría de las personas no son conscientes de lo complejo que es hablar y lo complejo que puede ser un idioma.

Do you have any suggestions for how students can better prepare for each class?
I always say that just doing one class per week is not enough. I think it is very important to create a connection with the language you are learning, especially if you don’t live in a country where the language is spoken. I recommend reading something every day. It doesn't have to be something long, it could be a post on Instagram, for example. Also, have a playlist on Spotify with songs you enjoy listening to. And when you have time, watch movies or series.
¿Qué consejos para los y las estudiantes para prepararse mejor para las clases?
Siempre digo que tomar solo una clase a la semana no es suficiente. Creo que es muy importante crear una conexión con el idioma que estás aprendiendo, especialmente si no vives en un país donde se habla el idioma. Recomiendo leer algo todos los días. No es necesario que sea algo largo, podría ser un post en Instagram, por ejemplo. Además, tener una lista de reproducción en Spotify con canciones que te guste escuchar. Y cuando tengas tiempo, mira películas o series.
What do you think the best method for memorisation is? And what teaching methods do you like to bring to the classroom?
No one method is better than the rest. Every person needs to find their own. I'm oldschool so I like flashcards, but that doesn’t mean it's the best thing for everyone.
When the students learn a new grammar structure or new vocabulary, I like to generate conversations in which they can use their new knowledge. I ask lots of questions in class. I always tell my students they can lie if they want – the most important thing is to speak. Moreover, if you learn a new word, I recommend coming up with some sentences that you could use in real conversations. It's not enough to learn a word on its own – we need to put it in a context.
¿Cuál te parece el mejor método de memorización? ¿Qué métodos utilizas más frecuentemente en las clases de español?
No hay un método mejor que otro. Cada persona necesita encontrar el suyo. Yo soy oldschool y me gustan las flashcards, pero eso no significa que sea la mejor manera para todos.
Cuando los estudiantes aprenden una nueva estructura gramatical o vocabulario, me gusta generar conversaciones en las que puedan utilizar el nuevo aprendizaje. Hago muchas preguntas en clases. Siempre le digo a mis estudiantes que pueden mentir si quieren, que lo importante es hablar. Por otro lado, cuando se aprende una palabra nueva, recomiendo crear algunas oraciones que luego sean útiles en conversaciones. No basta con aprender una palabra, hay que ponerla en contexto.

Is there a common question that students ask about the acquisition of Spanish? And your answer?
How can I improve faster?
I think it is very important to expose yourself to the language as much as possible. Kids, before speaking, hear a lot. You need to get used to the sounds, the linking words, the pronunciation of a word, and how the same word sounds in a sentence. In short, listen as much as you can, and study vocabulary every day.

¿Cómo puedo mejorar más rápido?
Creo que es muy importante exponerse al idioma lo más posible. Los niños, antes de hablar, escuchan mucho. Necesitas acostumbrarte a los sonidos, la vinculación de las palabras, la pronunciación de una palabra, cómo suena la misma palabra en una oración. En resumen, escuchar español lo más posible y estudiar vocabulario todos los días.
