Día de los Muertos, as it is known in Mexico, sees families decorate the graves of loved ones and celebrate their lives with food, parties, and other activities. Taking place in the city of Medellín, Colombia’s Flower Fair celebrates the painstaking and breathtaking work of silleteros - the farmers who cultivate and then create beautiful displays and installations made from flowers! Other highlights include an orchestral showcase, horse parades, as well as plenty of dancing.
This festival centres around a celebration of the Winter Solstice and the Inca sun god Inti. The festival involves a huge traditional ceremony that runs throughout Cusco and surrounding Inca ruins, followed by the usual partying and feasting! Impressive Inca clothing and items, as well as traditional rituals, characterise this Indigenous cultural festival in Peru.
A discussion of Latin American festivals would not be complete without the famous Carnival, held throughout Brazil in the early months of the year! Even though Brazilians don’t speak Spanish, a visit to the country during Carnival is well worth the effort! Parades, parties, and extravagant costumes characterise Carnival - and it's easy to see why this mega-fiesta lasts a whole week!
