Why did you study to become a teacher of Spanish?

Since I was a kid and my obsession with the English language began, I knew I would end up doing something related to linguistics. Because I studied English for so long, I’ve been exposed to the experience of learning a second language for many years, which is why I decided to study Translation and Teaching. As I was finishing my studies, I discovered a specialization in Spanish Teaching that I thought would be very useful for my upcoming life abroad.

¿Por qué estudiaste para ser profesora de español?

Desde que era muy chica y comenzó mi obsesión con el inglés, supe que acabaría haciendo algo relacionado con la lingüística y los idiomas. Estudié inglés durante muchos años y tuve una gran exposición a la experiencia de aprender una segunda lengua, por lo que decidí formarme como traductora y profesora de inglés. Cuando estaba terminando mis estudios, descubrí una especialización en Enseñanza de Español que me pareció muy útil para mi futuro viviendo en el extranjero.

When did you begin teaching Spanish and how did you start in Australia?

I began teaching Spanish online when my sister was living in Australia and had friends interested in learning the language – that’s when my “Spanish teaching era” unexpectedly began. Once in Australia, I taught children in Perth, but it was in Melbourne where I discovered how many people are into Spanish learning and how dedicated they are.

¿Cuándo empezaste a enseñar español y dónde? ¿Cómo y dónde empezaste a enseñarlo en Australia?

Empecé a enseñar español en línea cuando mi hermana vivía en Australia y conoció a gente que quería aprender el idioma: ahí fue cuando comenzó mi Spanish Teaching Era. Ya en Australia, enseñé a niños en Perth, pero fue en Melbourne donde descubrí cuánta gente está interesada en aprender español y con qué dedicación lo hacen.

What is a loveable aspect of teaching Spanish in Australia?

One aspect I love of teaching Spanish in Australia is how interested students are in the cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries. We Argentinians particularly love to brag about our amazing country, so I really enjoy the questions, reactions, and curiosity about our vocabulary, traditions, food, music, and so much more.

I truly appreciate people who make the time to learn a language alongside all the responsibilities of adult life nowadays, so for me, a language classroom is always an enjoyable and welcoming place to be.

¿Qué aspecto te gusta de la enseñanza del español en Australia?

Algo que me encanta de enseñar español en Australia es el interés que los estudiantes tienen en aspectos culturales de países hispanohablantes. Nosotros, los argentinos, tenemos una cierta tendencia a presumir de nuestro increíble país, así que disfruto muchísimo las preguntas, reacciones y el interés en nuestro vocabulario, tradiciones, comida, música y muchas cosas más.

Valoro mucho que los alumnos encuentren el tiempo para aprender una lengua entre todas las responsabilidades de la vida adulta hoy en día, por lo que un aula de español siempre me resulta un lugar muy agradable de habitar.

What is the most challenging aspect of teaching Australians?

I would say that a challenging aspect is the disconnection students sometimes have with the language between lessons. A teacher once told me that what you do after and between classes is just as important as the lesson itself. It’s very important to immerse oneself in the language in everyday life, and I know how hard that might be in the middle of a busy week.

¿Y qué es lo que te resulta más difícil de la enseñanza del español en Australia?

Pienso que un aspecto complicado puede ser la desconexión que los alumnos a veces experimentan entre una clase y otra. Una profesora me dijo una vez que lo que haces después de la clase es tan importante como la clase en sí. Se trata de sumergirse en la lengua e incorporarla al día a día, y sé lo difícil que puede ser en medio de una semana llena de trabajo y responsabilidades.

Do you have any suggestions for how students can better prepare for each class?

I would always suggest doing the homework and taking some time to review what we’ve worked on. Since we usually only see each other once a week, we don’t always have much time to revisit previous content in class before moving on. This can sometimes leave questions or doubts unresolved, which is why it’s so important for students to bring them up. We’re always there to go over things again as many times as needed.

¿Puedes aconsejar al estudiantado cómo se pueden preparar mejor para las clases?

Siempre sugiero hacer los deberes y encontrar un momento para repasar lo que vimos en la clase anterior. Al vernos solo una vez por semana, a veces no hay suficiente tiempo para revisar contenidos previos en clase y seguimos avanzando, lo que puede dejar preguntas o dudas sin resolver. Por eso es muy importante que los alumnos traigan esas preguntas a la clase. Siempre estamos ahí para explicar las veces que haga falta.

What do you think the best method for memorisation is?

Practice, practice, and more practice. But from my personal experience, music helps a lot too. I’ll never forget the feeling of being a kid and hearing one of my favourite artists use a tense or say a word I had just learned: it felt like a small victory, like what I was studying wasn’t just in a textbook but in real life. I truly believe song lyrics are one of the best tools for building vocabulary (or at least my favourite one).

¿Cuál te parece el mejor método de memorización?

Práctica, práctica y práctica. Pero también, en mi experiencia personal, la música ayuda muchísimo. Nunca olvidaré ese sentimiento de ser una niña y escuchar a unos de mis artistas favoritos usar un tiempo verbal o una palabra que recién había aprendido. Se sintió como una pequeña victoria, como que lo que estaba estudiando no estaba solo en un libro de texto, sino en la vida real. Creo realmente que las letras de canciones son una de las mejores herramientas de vocabulario (o al menos mi favorita).

Aquí les dejo una lista de canciones en español para que las vayan conociendo y disfrutando, ya sea para acompañar sus momentos de estudio y hacerlos más llevaderos, o simplemente para escuchar cuando quieran. Si tienen canciones en español que les gusten, ¡súmenlas también!

What teaching methods do you like to bring to the classroom?

I like to bring a communicative and student-centred approach to the classroom, where the focus is on using the language in meaningful, real-life contexts rather than only studying it in isolation. I create a relaxed and supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions and sharing experiences and thoughts. I also enjoy incorporating cultural elements into lessons, as I find they help students connect more deeply with the language and stay motivated.

¿Qué métodos utilizas más frecuentemente en las clases de español?

Me gusta adoptar un enfoque comunicativo y centrado en el alumno, donde el objetivo es usar el idioma en situaciones reales y no quedarse solo con la teoría. Busco crear un ambiente relajado y amable, donde los estudiantes se sientan cómodos cometiendo errores, haciendo preguntas y compartiendo experiencias u opiniones. También me gusta incluir elementos culturales siempre que puedo, ya que ayudan a que el idioma se sienta más vivo y hacen que los alumnos se mantengan más motivados y conectados.

Is there a common question that students ask about the acquisition of Spanish? And your answer?

A very common question is how long it will take to communicate fluently, and it’s such a difficult one to answer. Learning a language is a very personal experience and, as I mentioned before, it’s closely tied to what happens outside the classroom and to each student’s own motivation and interests. It can sometimes feel frustrating to think about everything that’s still left to learn, but what really matters is how much progress has already been made.

¿Hay alguna pregunta común de los estudiantes sobre la adquisición del español? ¿Y tu respuesta?

Una pregunta muy frecuente es cuánto tiempo lleva alcanzar la fluidez en español, y es una de las más difíciles de responder. Aprender una lengua es una experiencia muy personal y, como mencioné antes, está estrechamente vinculada a lo que cada uno vive fuera del aula y a su propio interés y motivación. A veces puede resultar frustrante pensar en todo lo que aún queda por aprender, pero lo importante es tener en cuenta todo lo que ya se ha avanzado.
