Why did you study to become a teacher of Spanish?
Teaching Spanish was not a premeditated decision, but it was brewing over the years. Reading and teaching are elements that have always been present in my childhood, so since I was little, I was attracted to stories and language. When I moved with my family from Buenos Aires to Barcelona, having to learn Catalan and being in touch with people from all over the world who are interested in Spanish also influenced me. It is not surprising, then, that I ended up studying Spanish Philology at the University of Barcelona, where I also specialized in literature.
When did you begin teaching Spanish?
While studying at university I started tutoring high school students with difficulties in the subjects Language, Literature and History. In 2013, after I finished my degree, I began teaching Spanish for foreigners in various Spanish schools in Barcelona and, also, private lessons to friends and students from other parts of the world.
How did you start in Australia?
A few weeks after arriving in Melbourne, walking around Northcote I discovered El Patio. I stopped and immediately felt that I had to go in and ask if there was any opportunity to teach there. And that's how, a short time later, my adventure began!
¿Por qué estudiaste para ser profesora de español?
Enseñar español no fue una decisión premeditada, sino que se fue gestando con los años. La lectura y la enseñanza son elementos que siempre han estado presentes en mi infancia, de modo que ya desde niña me sentí atraída por las historias y la lengua. Cuando con mi familia nos mudamos desde Buenos Aires a Barcelona, el hecho de tener que aprender catalán y el estar en contacto con personas de todas partes del mundo interesadas en el español, también me influyó. No es extraño, entonces, que terminara estudiando Filología Hispánica en la Universitat de Barcelona, donde también me especialicé en literatura.
¿Cuándo empezaste a enseñar español?
Desde que empecé a estudiar en la universidad di clases particulares a alumnos de instituto, con dificultades en las asignaturas de lengua, literatura e historia. En 2013, una vez terminada la carrera, comencé a dar clases de español para extranjeros en algunas academias de Barcelona y, también, de manera particular a amigos y estudiantes de otras partes del mundo.
¿Cómo empezaste en Australia?
A las pocas semanas de haber llegado a Melbourne, un día paseando por Northcote descubrí El Patio. Me detuve y de inmediato sentí que tenía que entrar y preguntar si había alguna oportunidad de poder dar clases allí. ¡Y así es como, poco tiempo después, empezó mi aventura!
What is a loveable aspect of teaching Spanish in Australia?
I love the interest that students have in traveling to Spanish-speaking countries and in knowing their culture. I also enjoy discovering the stories behind the different reasons that led them to study Spanish. At the same time, it is very enriching to be able to have contact with people of different nationalities, backgrounds and of all ages.
Do you have any suggestions for how students can better prepare for each class?
It is important to review what is done in class and try to do the homework in order to know what are the aspects that are not understood or that are more difficult to understand. Moreover, reading short texts, watching series or movies, as well as listening to songs or podcasts in Spanish can be helpful. And although it is obvious and even banal, it is important to have patience, trust, perseverance and, above all, enjoyment!
What do you think the best method for memorisation is?
I don't know if there is one method better than another, I think it depends on each student. For some of them is easier to memorize through visual activities; for others through constant repetition and rewriting, or through different types of associations. Other students prefer to use contexts or expose themselves to real situations. In my experience with other languages, the last one is the most helpful.
¿Qué aspecto te gusta de la enseñanza del español en Australia?
Me encanta el interés que los estudiantes tienen por viajar a los países hispanoahablantes y conocer su cultura. También disfruto mucho descubriendo las historias qué hay detrás, las distintas razones que los llevaron a estudiar español. Al mismo tiempo, es muy enriquecedor poder tener contacto con personas de diferentes contextos y nacionalidades, así como de todas las edades.
¿Puedes aconsejar al estudiantado cómo se pueden preparar mejor para las clases?
Es importante repasar lo visto en clase e intentar hacer los deberes para así saber cuáles son aquellos aspectos que no se entienden o que resultan más difíciles de comprender. Por otro lado, leer textos breves, ver series o películas, así como escuchar canciones o podcasts en español puede ser de gran ayuda. Y aunque resulte obvio e incluso banal, es importante tener paciencia, confianza, perseverancia y, sobre todo, ¡disfrutar!
¿Qué método crees que es mejor para memorización?
No sé si existe un método mejor que otro, creo que depende de cada estudiante. Para algunos es más fácil memorizar a través de actividades visuales; para otros a través de la constante repetición y reescritura, o por medio de diferentes tipos de asociaciones. Otros estudiantes prefieren hacer uso de contextos o exponerse a situaciones reales. En mi experiencia con otros idiomas, esto último es lo más me ha ayudado.
What teaching methods do you like to bring to the classroom?
It depends on the group, since each student is different. In that sense, I like to understand the needs of every class and take them as a reference to get the most out of it. However, there are two methods that I always use as a basis: the communicative and the situational. It is important to put into practice what has been learned through dialogues and activities that simulate real situations. Many times we think that we don’t have enough tools to express ourselves, however, sometimes it is a matter of understanding how to take advantage of the knowledge we have, and of learning to connect and use them, no matter how minimal.
Is there a common question that students ask about the acquisition of Spanish? And your answer
Many students ask me: "So, is it always like this?" Or "Is there any rule?" I usually answer these questions by saying that I understand the importance of having solid and unchanging examples or rules, since they help to have a better understanding, but the reality is that we will probably find exceptions. Don’t give up!
¿Qué métodos utilizas más frecuentemente en las clases de español?
Depende del grupo, ya que cada estudiante es diferente. En ese sentido, me gusta comprender las necesidades de cada clase y tomarlas como referencia para obtener el máximo provecho posible. Sin embargo, hay dos métodos que siempre utilizo como base: el comunicativo y el situacional. Es importante poner en práctica lo aprendido por medio de diálogos y actividades que simulen situaciones reales. Muchas veces pensamos que no tenemos suficientes herramientas para expresarnos, sin embargo, en ocasiones, es cuestión de entender cómo aprovechar los conocimientos que tenemos, y de aprender a conectarlos y utilizarlos, por mínimos que sean.
¿Hay alguna pregunta común de los estudiantes sobre la adquisición del español? ¿Y tu respuesta?
Muchos estudiantes me preguntan: “Entonces, ¿es siempre así?” o “¿Existe alguna regla?” Suelo responder a estas preguntas diciendo que entiendo la importancia de tener ejemplos o reglas sólidos e invariables, ya que ayudan a tener una mejor comprensión, pero la realidad es que muy posiblemente encontraremos excepciones. ¡No os rindáis!
